Human Rights in Crisis: War, Famine, and Refugees

Join the Institute of Politics and The Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts as we welcome David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). A former Labour MP in the UK Parliament, Mr. Miliband has served the United Kingdom as both Environment Secretary and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

Today, with the IRC, Mr. Miliband directs war-relief operations across the globe, as well as refugee resettlement programs throughout the United States. He will draw on his years of foreign policy experience to discuss the Trump administration’s evolving travel ban, the European Union’s refugee resettlement efforts, and the East African famine crisis.

Professor James Robinson, Institute Director of The Pearson Institute, will moderate this discussion.

Financing Conflict Resolution

Last year’s peace accords between the government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) marked a historic turning point in Colombia’s more than fifty-year conflict. Much media attention was given to the reintegration of the former guerillas, the controversial transitional justice agreement, and the Nobel peace prize awarded to President Santos. But who pays for peace?

Please join The Pearson Institute in welcoming Ximena Cadena, former Deputy Minister General in the Colombian Ministry of Finance, for a lecture on the financial components of conflict resolution. From the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of FARC combatants to development investment in Colombia’s neglected rural regions, Cadena will discuss the ins and outs of her former agency’s role in financing Colombia’s peace.

This event is part of The Pearson Institute's Lunch and Learn series.
