2024 Agenda

Negotiation and Agreement

On October 18, 2024, the University of Chicago’s Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts will hold its annual Pearson Global Forum. As conflicts begin and protract, we must reflect on how negotiations can engender agreements that bring about stability and peace. How have successful peace agreements fared in the years following their implementation and where can lessons be applied to existing conflicts? This year’s Forum, Negotiation & Agreement, will dive into conflicts of past and present, and analyze steps towards a peaceful future.

The Pearson Global Forum is a significant public event with the goal of convening leading scholars and high-level policy makers from around the globe to exchange ideas and maximize the potential for impact in preventing and resolving violent conflicts and informing policy.

On October 18, 2024, the University of Chicago's Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts will hold its 7th annual Pearson Global Forum. This event, which is free and open to the public, will focus on the theme of “Negotiation and Agreement.” The world is experiencing an increase in global conflict; over the last decade, war has been on the rise, with an increase in political violence.

The Pearson Global Forum will consider both past and present negotiations and agreements, seeking insights that can be applied to new or entrenched conflicts. This event is particularly newsworthy because in a year where over half the world's population will be voting and where electoral and political violence continues to grow, it is important to hear from former heads of state, policymakers, and practitioners as they discuss possible paths to peace.

WHAT: The seventh annual Pearson Global Forum on Negotiation and Agreement | Free and Open to All

WHEN: 18 October 2024 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CDT

WHERE: David Rubenstein Forum at the University of Chicago, University Hall and virtually on YouTube Live

WHO: The Forum will bring together former ambassadors, government representatives, academics and policymakers who will review past and present conflicts to explore what it takes to negotiate a peace agreement and the strategies needed to maintain those resolutions once they are achieved.

The Forum will feature keynote addresses and panel discussions by over 20 former heads of state and leading experts in the field of conflict negotiation including:

  • Husam Zomlot, Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Government of Palestine
