Human Rights in Crisis: War, Famine, and Refugees

The Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts, in partnership with the Institute of Politics, welcomed David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). A former Labour MP in the UK Parliament, Miliband served the United Kingdom as both Environment Secretary and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

Today, with the IRC, Miliband directs war-relief operations across the globe, as well as refugee resettlement programs throughout the United States. In this event, Miliband discusses his years of foreign policy experience, the Trump administration’s evolving travel ban, the European Union’s refugee resettlement efforts, and the East African famine crisis.

Professor James Robinson, Institute Director of The Pearson Institute, moderated this discussion.

Christopher Blattman, the Ramalee E. Pearson Professor of Global Conflict Studies joined a panel discussion at the International House at the University of Chicago on how urban violence, domestically and abroad, is impacts our communities. The event is the first of a three-part series on issues of peace and conflict presented with Rotary International. 

Other participants included Anne Richard (AM '84), Former Assistant Secretary, Population, Refugees, and Migration, US Department of State; Gary Slutkin, Founder and CEO, Cure Violence and Professor,  UIC School of Public Health; Brooke Stearns Lawson, Senior Conflict Advisor, Organized Crime, USAID Africa Bureau. The event was moderated by Jerome McDonnell, Host, Worldview, WBEZ.
