Caren Grown

Senior Fellow

Caren Grown is a Senior Fellow in the Center for Sustainable Development at the Brooking Institution where she is launching a major new workstream focused on the economics of tackling gender gaps at the core of sustainable and inclusive development.  Prior to joining the Brookings Institution, she held two positions at the World Bank Group: Senior Technical Advisor in the Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment Global Practice (2021-2022) and Global Director, Gender (2014-2021).

Over the course of her career, Dr. Grown has held several senior positions, including as Economist-In-Residence and Co-Director of the Program on Gender Analysis in Economics at American University (2007-2014), Senior Gender Advisor at USAID (2011-2013), Director of the Economics Team at the International Center for Research on Women (2001-2005), and Senior Program Officer at the MacArthur Foundation (1991-2001).  Dr. Grown’ s publications include Taxation and Gender Equity (Routledge 2010), The Feminist Economics of Trade, and Taking Action: Achieving Gender Equality and Empowering Women (Earthscan Press 2005). Her articles have appeared in World Development, Journal of International Development, and The Lancet.  She holds a PhD and MA in Economics from the New School for Social Research and a BA in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles.
