The Pearson Institute Research Fund

The Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts has established a research and innovation fund that will provide grants to faculty and PhD students conducting research on global conflict. The studies must be rooted in innovative, data-driven research that seeks to understand and reduce global conflict and ultimately demonstrate public policy impact. The proposals may be regionally and topically diverse.

The Pearson Institute is focused on using quantitative social science to advance the study of conflict, but submissions from any field and using any methodology are permitted. Proposals are most likely to be funded if they demonstrate how the research will advance an important question in public policy involving global conflict.

Proposals may be submitted by University of Chicago faculty and PhD students. Faculty researchers are eligible to receive between $5,000 - $20,000, while PhD students are eligible for funding between $2,000 - $10,000. This will be a competitive process so partial funding is likely, and full allotments will be rare, but we appreciate ambitious proposals.

Eligibility

Grant proposals are welcome from full-time faculty members at the University of Chicago including assistant, associate, and full-time professors. These proposals may include individual research projects, pilot projects, or case studies. We welcome research proposals that are inter-disciplinary and collaborate with partners outside the University of Chicago. Students submitting proposals must be full-time PhD students at the University of Chicago. You may submit one proposal per person. You can submit one individual proposal each and also up to one joint proposal in addition.

The fund will prioritize policy-relevant work in the social sciences, particularly quantitatively-oriented studies. However, we are open to considering research proposals from other disciplines and will evaluate these applications based on their contribution to the understanding and resolution of conflict.

Applications

Applications must include:

1. A proposal outlining clear research objectives and how the funds would support this research (no more than one page, 12 pt font, Word document)

2. CV or resume

3. Budget proposal (please complete this Excel Template):

Examples of acceptable costs associated would include RA salaries, travel, data, and materials.

Examples of unacceptable costs are indirect costs. These are costs that are not directly identifiable to a specific sponsored project (administrative, clerical work, telephones, office supplies, electricity, gas, rent, etc.). Usually they are assigned to a project as a percentage of direct costs.

Please send proposals and any questions to thepearsoninstitute@uchicago.edu

Deadlines

The deadline for proposals is Friday, December 8, 2017 at 5:00 pm CST.

Decisions will be announced in February. All funds must be spent within the 12 months following acceptance of the award. Unobligated balances will be returned to the fund for reallocation.

Commitments

Those who receive grant funds may be requested to share a working paper and/or their experience publicly during an event, and may be highlighted on our website. You will also be asked to acknowledge The Pearson Institute in your findings.
